A leading activist for "black rights," he was a figure who generated both controversy and admiration. Many reggae songs are dedicated to him, including those by The Visionaries, Burning Spear, The Mighty Diamonds, The Gladiators, Ras Michael, Vivian Jones, Fred Locks, Linval Thompson, Joe Higgs, and (again) Burning Spear.
